Activist warns Indians could turn to McCain

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A superdelegate to the Democratic National Convention from Oklahoma who is also an American Indian activist is warning Democrats not to take the Indian vote for granted.

Kalyn Free is president of the Tulsa-based Indigenous Democratic Network which works to elect Indian candidates to office.

Free isn't happy that neither Hillary Rodham Clinton or Barack Obama attended an INDN-sponsored presidential forum in California last August and she wants the candidates to meet with tribal leaders.

Free says apparent Republican nominee John McCain has helped Indians in the past and that Democrats are making a mistake if they think Indians will automatically vote for the Democratic nominee.

As a superdelegate Free says she remains uncommitted and wants to hear more from the candidates about which will best protect tribal sovereignty and respect Indian Country.

Americanization can refer to the policies of the United States government and public opinion that there is a standard set of cultural values that should be held in common by all citizens. Education was and is viewed as the primary method in the acculturation process. These opinions were harshly applied when it came to Americanization of Native Americans compared to immigrant populations who arrived with their "non-American traditions".
